Harry Styles - Falling

Theme: Regret, Guilt and Reminiscing

The very first line of the song is “I'm in my bed, And you're not here.” Harry Styles thinks back to a time where they [Unknown] once shared a bed together. The next verses read “Forget what I said, It's not what I meant, And I can't take it back, I can't unpack the baggage you left,” Regret.

He desperately wishes he could take back the words used during a drunken call that ultimately caused the breakup. In the chorus of the song he sings “What am I now? What am I now? What if I'm someone I don't want around? I'm falling again, I'm falling again, I'm falling”. He doesn’t know who he is without the person he loves and how to forgive himself for his actions. The pain of knowing what he did to the person he cares about the most to have hurt them so severely, is causing him immense self hatred. Guilt.

“You said you care, And you missed me too… And it kills me 'cause I know we've run out of things we can say”. These next verses imply this unknown person still cares for and misses Harry, but they can not forget how he behaved and spoke to them. Things are not the same as they were. They are not the people they were, their life together is just simply memories now. Reminiscing.

Towards the end, Styles sings “And I get the feeling that you'll never need me again”. He wants their old relationship and life together back. The thought of the love of his life not needing him in their life anymore kills him. Harry wants them to depend on him, just as they often did in the past.

As he slips away from himself and his identity, relishing in the guilt and regret of his mistakes, he sings

“I'm falling again, I'm falling again, I'm falling”.
